Pilots Prevail in PK Shootout to Advance to RRAC Semifinals

SHREVEPORT, La. – In a thrilling Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Women's Soccer Tournament Quarterfinal, the Louisiana State University Shreveport (LSUS) Pilots emerged victorious against Texas A&M University-San Antonio (TAMUSA) in a penalty kick shootout, winning 5-4 after a 2-2 tie following double overtime. The match officially goes down as a tie in the record books, but LSUS's resilience and clutch performance in the shootout secured their spot in the semifinal round.

The Pilots took the lead early in the first half when Juliana Anchondo connected with a well-placed assist from Jillian Rogers in the 28th minute, putting LSUS up 1-0. The Jaguars responded in the 56th minute as Ana Barragan found the back of the net, leveling the score at 1-1.

Anchondo struck again for LSUS in the 77th minute, capitalizing on an assist from Yuvia Vazquez to regain the lead at 2-1. But TAMUSA's Barragan wasn't finished, delivering a dramatic equalizer in the 89th minute off a setup from Yhoalibeth Alvarez, sending the game into overtime at 2-2.

With neither team able to break the deadlock in two tense overtime periods, the match proceeded to a penalty shootout. LSUS's Diana Godines, Alba Martinez Alvarez, Jade Derks, Maja Nikolic, and Gemma White all stepped up and delivered under pressure, converting each of their penalty kicks to clinch the 5-4 shootout victory.

The Pilots will now advance to face in-state rival and sister school, Louisiana State University-Alexandria, in the RRAC Women's Soccer Tournament Semifinal on November 12. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. in Texarkana, Texas.
