Porter played from 2005-2008 where he led the Pilots to a collective 84-15 record during his time on the court. With Porter's help, LSUS brought home GCAC regular season titles in 2006 and 2008 along with GCAC tournament championships in 2006, 2007, and 2008. Porter put together his best season in the 2007-2008 campaign when he averaged 22 points and knocked down 106 three-pointers, while leading the Pilots to a 31 win season. Porter ranks 5th all-time in total points scored with 1,430 points.

However, one of the most impressive things about Porter was his deterimination to come back from a fractured cervical vertebrae suffered in a game on November 28, 2006. Doctors say that 99% of people with that same injury are paralyzed for life. After a successful surgery, Porter walked out of the hospital a few days later and then returned to the court the following year to lead his team in scoring while ranking in the top five in scoring nationally. Porter was awarded the 2008 U.S. Basketball Writers Association "Most Courageous Award" and the NAIA Pattison Family Champions of Character Award.

The Pilot family would not be complete without Mike McCarthy and his contributions to the program, and because of that, McCarthy was named the first ever Pilot of the Year in 2018.
