Pilots Drop Season Opener in Final Minutes

SHREVEPORT, LA — In an action-packed encounter on Thursday morning, the LSU Shreveport Pilots were defeated by the USAO Drovers with a final score of 4-2. The match, held in Shreveport, saw the Pilots dominate the first half with the Drovers stealing a late win. The loss moves the Pilots to 0-1-0 on the early season.

The game began with both teams testing each other's defenses. Despite early pressure from both sides, the match remained scoreless until the 25th minute when LSU Shreveport's Dawniella Torres scored the opening goal, assisted by Paulina Fierro, to give the Pilots a 1-0 lead.

Moments later, in the 30th minute, Juliana Anchondo extended the Pilots' lead to 2-0 with a well-placed shot, assisted by Diana Godines. The Pilots seemed to have control of the game, but USAO Drovers responded with increased aggression.

The Drovers made several substitutions in an attempt to wear down the Pilot defense, and in the 66th minute on a clear offsides call that was missed, Daniela Salinas scored, reducing the deficit to 2-1. The game saw intense back-and-forth action, and just 11 minutes later, Salinas struck again, leveling the score at 2-2.

As the match progressed, the Pilots would see the game slip away. In the 87th minute, Katie O'Keefe scored the go-ahead goal, assisted by Salinas, giving USAO a 3-2 lead. The Drovers sealed their victory with a final goal by Ilse de Jong in the 89th minute, bringing the score to 4-2.

Despite the defeat, the Pilots showed the caliber of team they can be. Speed and athleticism were on full display today and there is little doubt this team is primed for an incredible season. 

The Pilots will regroup and prepare for their next matchup on the road against the Mid-American Christian on August 29.
