STERLINGTON, La. – Top-ranked LSU Shreveport opened the 2025 RRAC Baseball Tournament in dominant fashion Thursday afternoon, shutting out Huston-Tillotson University 10-0 in a seven-inning run-rule victory at Sterlington Sports Complex. The Pilots improved to 48-0 on the season with the win and advanced to the winner's bracket.
After a quiet start, the Pilots broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded, Jackson Syring was hit by a pitch to bring home Josh Gibson, and DJ Walker followed with a walk that plated Austin Gomm, giving LSUS a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, Gibson added on with a solo home run to left field to make it 3-0. The sixth inning proved to be the decisive frame as the Pilots erupted for five runs. Ryan Davenport crushed a three-run home run following a pair of HTU errors, scoring Carlos Vega and Jose Sallorin—all unearned. Gomm then doubled to drive in Gibson, and Vantrel Reed capped the inning with an RBI single to push the lead to 8-0.
LSUS finished the job in the seventh. Gibson singled in Anthony Swenda, and Gomm drove in his second run of the game with a single to center that scored Sallorin, securing the 10-0 run-rule victory.
On the mound, Draven Zeigler (11-0) was dominant once again. The right-hander tossed a complete-game four-hit shutout, striking out seven and walking just one. Huston-Tillotson's Ethan Walker (4-7) took the loss after allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits through 5.2 innings. Jonas Garza allowed four more runs (two earned) in relief.
Davenport (HR, 3 RBI), Gibson (HR, 2 RBI), and Gomm (2B, 2 RBI) led a balanced LSUS attack, while Syring, Reed, and Walker each contributed an RBI. The Pilots also swiped six bases, including two each from Sallorin and Vega.
LSUS now moves on to face Our Lady of the Lake University on Friday at 3 p.m.
