Pilots Tie History in Run Rule Victory Over Nelson, 13-3

By: Cameron Braun, LSUS Sports Information

On Tuesday, the Louisiana State University Shreveport Pilots added to their perfect season record as they defeated the Nelson Lions for their 41st consecutive win, tying the record for the longest win streak in NAIA history.

The action started in the top of the first inning when Xavien Thompson drove a run in to make it 1-0 Lions. In the bottom of the first, LSUS tied it when Vantrel Reed recorded an RBI on a groundout, then an errand throw by the catcher on a Jackson Syring stolen base later in the inning allowed the Pilots to take a 2-1 lead. The Lions tied it back up in the top of the second inning when Andrew Ortiz drove a run in with a single. In the bottom of the third Reed came through again with a single that was misplayed by the left fielder and allowed both Reed and Josh Gibson to score making it 4-2 LSUS.

In the top of the fourth, Josh Pinter singled in a run to cut it to 4-3 Pilots. Then bottom fifth, a Syring triple and Jose Sallorin sacrifice fly extended the Pilot lead to 7-3. LSUS tacked on more in the bottom of the sixth when Reed drove a run in on a triple then an error by the shortstop allowed Bula White to score, making it 9-3 LSUS. In the bottom of the seventh, Austin Gomm walked in a run, Reed reached first on a fielding error by the second basemen to drive in an eleventh run, and White came through with a two-run single to secure the walk-off run rule win.

Calvin Shepherd took the ball for LSUS in a winning effort and pitched just over an inning, giving up two earned runs on five hits, walking two and striking out a pair. Shawn Robertson started for Nelson and received the loss after three innings pitched with three earned runs on four hits, one unearned run, three walks and a strikeout.

Reed had a big day at the plate for the Pilots, recording three hits including a triple and driving in two runs and scoring three times. Syring also had two hits, two RBIs, a triple, and two stolen bases.

For Nelson, Ortiz and Thompson each recorded two hits and an RBI.

The Pilots are back in action this Friday night when the University of Houston-Victoria comes to town for Little League Night as LSUS opens Senior Weekend. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
