Pilots Roll Past Southwest 18-1 to Sweep Series

HOBBS, N.M. —  The LSUS Pilots remained unbeaten with a commanding 18-1 win over the University of the Southwest on Saturday afternoon, completing a series sweep on the road and improving to 40-0 overall and 24-0 in Red River Athletic Conference play.

Southwest struck first in the bottom of the second inning when Sage Bonner grounded out to shortstop, driving in C. Miller for a 1-0 lead. That advantage was short-lived.

The Pilots responded with a seven-run explosion in the third inning. Josh Gibson tied the game with an RBI single, followed by a sacrifice fly from Austin Gomm to give LSUS a 2-1 lead. Vantrel Reed added an RBI single, and Anthony Swenda walked with the bases loaded to plate another run. Jose Sallorin followed with another bases-loaded walk, pushing the score to 5-1.

Jackson Syring extended the lead in the fourth with a three-run homer to left, scoring Gibson and Ryan Davenport to make it 8-1.

LSUS added four more runs in the fifth inning. Diego Aragon doubled home a run before Davenport delivered an RBI single. Gomm notched his second sacrifice fly of the game, and Reed capped the inning with his second RBI single, making it 12-1.

The scoring continued in the sixth as Sallorin singled in a run and Gibson followed with a two-RBI single to stretch the lead to 15-1.

In the seventh, Cooper Huspen drove in two more with a double, and Angel Rodriguez drew a bases-loaded walk to push the final tally to 18-1.

Cobe Reeves (8-0) earned the win on the mound, tossing five dominant innings. He allowed just one hit and one run while striking out eight and walking three.

Gibson and Reed each stole a base as the Pilots showcased aggressive baserunning and timely hitting. Syring, Gibson, and several others fueled an offense that tallied 18 runs on the afternoon.

Elijah Hernandez added a stolen base for the Mustangs. Starting pitcher Kobi Carpio (4-3) took the loss, giving up six runs on five hits over three innings. He walked seven and struck out two.

LSUS returns to action Tuesday, April 15, hosting Nelson University at Pilot Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
