On Tuesday, the Louisiana State University Shreveport Pilots (LSUS) took it to the Texas Wesleyan Rams in their first midweek home game of the season securing their 30th win, 15-2.
The Rams kicked off the scoring when Mac Morelan hit a wall-scraping home run out to left to give Texas Wesleyan a 1-0 lead. The Pilots got their bats going in the bottom of the fourth when DJ Walker woke the bats up with an RBI triple. Walker later came home on an Austin Gomm sacrifice fly to give LSUS the lead. Ian Montz added to the scoring with his first home run of the season, making it 4-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, it all fell apart for the Rams. Jackson Syring drove in a run with a walk to make it 5-1. This was followed by an RBI walk by Gomm, an RBI hit-by-pitch by Montz, a Jose Sallorin RBI Walk, then Diego Aragon knocked in two more to make it 9-1. Josh Gibson and Angel Rodriguez both worked RBI walks, then Vantrel Reed punched one through the middle to knock in two more runs. The Pilots capped off their twelve-run fifth inning with a two-run triple from Syring. The Rams got one more across when Brandon Vela doubled in the top of the sixth inning to make it 15-2. Josh Miller shut it down in the seventh to close out the game.
Calvin Shepherd got the win for the Pilots in his first start of the season, going four innings, giving up one earned run on two hits, walking two and striking out five. For Texas Wesleyan, David Theriot received the loss after going four innings giving up three earned runs on five hits and striking one out.
It was an interesting day at the plate for LSUS as they worked eight total walks, all of which came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Aragon had three hits, two of which came in the bottom of the fifth inning and drove in two runs. Reed recorded two hits and two RBIs. Montz had a hit and two RBIs including his first homer of the season. For the Rams, Morelan hit a home run, and Vela recorded an RBI double.
LSUS will be back at home on March 28 to face Texas College. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
