Pilots Open Conference With A Sweep Over Huston Tillotson
Austin, Texas—In an impressive doubleheader series finale, the Pilots of LSU Shreveport dominated the Rams of Huston Tillotson, clinching victories of 7-1 and 17-3. With the two wins the Pilots are 11-1 overall and 3-0 in their conference opening weekend.
Game one saw the Pilots jump to an early lead in the top of the first inning, scoring two runs. Jose Sallorin kicked off the offense with a single, later brought home by a Vantrel Reed triple. Reed then crossed the plate on an AJ Fritz groundout. The Rams responded with a run in the bottom of the inning, narrowing the gap to 2-1. The Pilots and Rams battled before the Pilots broke out in the top of the fourth, adding four more runs to extend their lead to 6-1. They tacked on one more run in the seventh, securing a 7-1 victory. Draven Zeigler pitched a stellar game, facing 28 batters, securing six strikeouts, and yielding just five hits. Austin Gomm led the offense, going 2-3 with a run scored, while Vantrel Reed contributed with a 2-4 performance and a run of his own.
In game two, the Pilots exploded for six runs in the first inning, setting the tone for the contest. By the bottom of the third, they had extended their lead to 9-0. The Rams managed to break the shutout in the fourth inning, scoring two runs, but the Pilots responded with eight more runs in the fifth inning, putting the game out of reach. The Pilots added one more run in the sixth before the game was called after the seventh inning due to the mercy rule. Lex Meinderts started strong on the mound for the Pilots, pitching 3.1 innings with five strikeouts. Trevor Burkhart and Ryan Davenport led the offensive charge, both going 3-2 at the plate. Burkhart contributed two runs and two RBIs, while Davenport tallied three runs and 3 RBIs. Christian Hobbs also had a solid performance, going 2 for 2 with two runs and one RBI.
With dominant performances in both games, the Pilots showcased their strength and depth, sweeping the doubleheader series finale in convincing fashion.
The Pilots will be back in action Friday February 23rd as they take on conference rival LSU Alexandria . First pitch is set for 6:00pm from Alexandria, Louisiana.
