Pilots Hold Their Ground, Take Down Southwest 67-62
SHREVEPORT, La. — The LSUS Pilots (18-3, 17-1 RRAC) are proving why they belong at the top of the Red River Athletic Conference. Just days after knocking off Xavier to claim the No. 1 spot, LSUS backed it up with a gritty 67-62 win over the University of the Southwest on Thursday night at The Dock for Homecoming.
Selma Markisic led the charge once again, dropping a game-high 22 points while adding four rebounds and two assists. Helena Galunic was dominant on the boards, nearly securing a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Paula Gonzalez Herrero provided a steady presence, finishing with 10 points and four rebounds as the Pilots showed their depth.
LSUS battled through an off-shooting night—hitting 31.7% from the field and 27.6% from three—but made up for it with relentless defense and hustle plays. The Pilots forced Southwest into costly mistakes, winning the turnover battle and converting 16 steals into 23 points. Their ability to capitalize on defensive pressure proved to be the difference.
While Southwest put up a fight behind Hailee Brandon's 15 points and Milinda Arguellez's 14-point, 10-rebound double-double, LSUS never let up. Even as the Mustangs shot a strong 39.7% from the floor, the Pilots' ability to disrupt possessions and control the tempo kept them in control.
Now riding the momentum of 13 consecutive wins, LSUS will look to keep rolling on Saturday, Feb. 1 when they host Paul Quinn College at The Dock. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
